One of the more challenging aspects of having an eye condition that has a lengthy and/or frequent eye drop regimen is managing to get those drops administered without missing any doses. Patient compliance has long been a challenge for ophthalmologists treating patients with glaucoma or eye surgery.
Sometimes, patients don’t have someone to help them administer the drops at every dose, so half or more of the medication ends up running down their cheek. Other times, the problem is remembering the frequent dosing. But two new treatment options at Collins Vision are helping our patients overcome the eye drop challenge so they can stop worrying about their eye drop regimen and start enjoying their life and their vision.
Dissolvable Implant for Patients With Glaucoma
If you’ve been diagnosed with glaucoma or high eye pressure (ocular hypertension), you know how important it is to diligently manage your eye pressure in order to prevent permanent damage to your optic nerve. If you’ve been prescribed eye drops to manage your eye pressure, you know how challenging it can be to remember to apply the drops every day, or use them when you are traveling.
Collins Vision is happy to announce that we have a powerful, new treatment approach to reducing eye pressure for people with open-angle glaucoma or high eye pressure (ocular hypertension). It’s called DURYSTA® and it’s the first and only FDA-approved dissolvable ocular implant that helps reduce pressure in your eye. Once implanted, DURYSTA slowly releases preservative-free medication in your eye for several months, eliminating the need for daily eye drops to manage your glaucoma. The tiny implant can be placed in your eye during cataract surgery, or done in a quick, in-office procedure.

An Eye-Opening Solution for Post-Surgical Pain and Inflammation
For our patients who have procedures like cataract surgery or LASIK, we typically prescribe a regimen of eye drops to help manage post-surgical pain. We are excited to offer a new post-surgical treatment for pain and inflammation. DEXTENZA® is a dissolvable ocular implant that provides up to 30 days of sustained, preservative-free steroid coverage, making it easier for patients to recover from their procedure without the hassle of an extensive and lengthy eye drop regimen.
DEXTENA is a tiny implant placed into the tear duct. It activates with the moisture in the eye to bathe the surface of the eye with dexamethasone for up to 30 days. Just one insert replaces up to 112 eye drops, making your post-surgical recovery much easier to manage. Once all the medication is released, the insert simply dissolves.
“At Collins Vision, we are always looking for ways to improve patient experience and eliminate barriers to make patient compliance easier. We are excited to be able to offer these two new treatment options to our patients.”
