September is National Falls Prevention Month

After learning she had cataracts in both eyes at the age of 61, Susan began researching cataract surgeons near where she lives. Today, she is beyond thrilled with how well she can see since having her cataracts removed at Collins Vision.

“I have been wearing glasses since elementary school and the lenses were getting thicker and thicker every year,” said Susan. “When I developed cataracts, I met with Dr. Collins and his excellent team to see what my options were and how to finally get rid of my glasses. Per his recommendation, I decided on the premium lenses, so I would not have to wear glasses anymore. It truly is a miracle! I can see without my glasses! Free at last! I am extremely grateful.”

In reality, Susan’s surgery likely did more for her than improve her poor vision. When people see better, they can also move and get more exercise. The surgery also improves visual contrast, which decreases the risk of falls.

Falling is a Significant Health Threat to Seniors

September is National Falls Prevention Month, making this the ideal time to talk about this important issue. According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls threaten seniors’ safety and independence and can come with significant economic and personal costs.

Polly had cataract surgery at Collins Vision in July of 2020, after a tumble on the sidewalk in front of her home left her with a painful, two-month recovery. “I was tripping over things inside the house and I just knew it was time to do something about it,” said Polly. “I didn’t want to fall again and break my arm like I nearly did earlier in the year.”

Falls are considered the leading cause of death due to injury for those over age 65, accounting for 40% of all nursing home admissions. Falls are also the leading cause of injury-related ER visits for older adults, the primary cause of hip fractures and are responsible for more than half of fatal head injuries. Nearly half of all seniors who have a fall do not live independently again afterward. While not all falls are due to poor vision and depth perception, of course, many are.
Today, Polly is amazed at how good her restored vision is. “I am so thrilled with my results!” she said. “The experience at Collins Vision has been great, and their experience and expertise are top-notch.” Watch the video below for more of Polly’s story.

Cataract surgery is the most performed surgical procedure in the U.S. today, with more than 3 million Americans having cataracts removed each year (Prevent Blindness America). Cataract surgery has come a long way over the years, and at Collins Vision, we are leading the way in those advances.

Technological advances and the advent of laser-assisted cataract surgery have brought new levels of accuracy and safety to an already safe procedure. What used to require general anesthesia, a hospital stay and weeks of recovery time is now performed in an outpatient setting with a local anesthetic, tiny incisions, no stitches and minimal downtime.
